2012 Tasmanian Junior Pennant Final   Vale Don Halliwell OAM

The 2012 Tasmanian Junior Pennant Final was conducted today at the Royal Hobart Golf Club.

For the second time in three years the host club has snatched victory from the hands of the more fancied Riverside Golf Club team.

Some fantastic performances from the likes of Dane Hibberd and Mitchell Stalker ensured a 3-2 victory over the defending champions.

Hibberd defeated Dougie Warren 3&2 while Stalker won a nail biting match with Kade Philpott at the 20th hole.

Royal Hobart team Captain Harry Bevis chipped in with a 1up victory over Zac Swan.

Riverside’s wins went to Isaac Pinnington who defeated James Dalton 4&2 and Sam Manix-Geeves who overcame Gus Burrell 5&4.

Golf Tasmania extends its sympathies to the family and friends of Don Halliwell OAM who died on February 11 in Hobart aged 72.

Halliwell was President of the Australian Golf Union in 1987 and 1993 and also served as Australia's delegate to the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation and World Amateur Golf Council.

Halliwell was a Tasmanian state selector for 10 years and state team manager for six years.

Halliwell joined the Devonport Golf Club in 1960 and was president from 1973-75.

Halliwell was made a life member and achieved the same accolade at North Western District Golf Union, Northern Tasmanian Golf Association and the Tasmanian Golf Council.

Halliwell was made an OAM in 1996 for services to golf at a state, national and international level.

Halliwell is survived by his wife Susan and children (twin sons) Alan and James and daughters Nicole and Fiona.

2012 James Boag Claremont Shield   Vale Lindsay Wastell

Tasmania’s club teams championship the James Boag Claremont Shield has concluded.

Tasmania Golf Club has claimed this year’s championship.

The defending champions won with an even-par total of 497.

Second place went to the host club Mowbray with Riverside in third.

The Tasmanian golfing community is mourning the loss of one of its administrators, Lindsay Wastell, who passed away on December 28.

Wastell was a club administrator at Mowbray Golf Club from 1951 to 1997 including fifteen years as Secretary/Treasurer and eleven years as President.

Wastell was duly made a Life member of the club in 1978 and received further recognition with the third hole named in his honour.

Wastell was a delegate to the Northern Tasmanian Golf Association and to the Tasmanian Golf Council for approximately 40 years.

Wastell was duly made a life member of both bodies.

A qualified accountant, Wastell used these financial skills to help manage the club develop to where it is today.

Wastell was instrumental behind the planning of the existing clubhouse in the early 1970’s culminating with its opening in 1975.

Wastell was a club historian, avid golfer and had a long record as a pennant player.

2012 Country Club Tasmania Open Golf Championship   2012 James Boag Thyne Trophy


The 2012 Country Club Tasmania Open Golf Championship has concluded.

This year's championship was conducted at Country Club Tasmania from February 23-26.

17-year-old Ricky Kato has won 2012 Country Club Tasmania Open Golf Championship.

The New South Welshman won the National Trial event with rounds 67, 65, 67 and 76, a nine-under-par total of 275.

Kato claimed the event by two strokes from New South Welshman Brett Drewitt on 277 (-7).

Victoria’s Geoff Drakeford placed third on 278 (-6).

Kingston Beach Golf Club’s Nathan Gatehouse was the leading Tasmanian on 281 (-3).

New South Wales, represented by Daniel Bringolf and Brett Drewitt, collected the two-man-team trophy, the Don Cameron Shield.

The 2012 James Boag Thyne Trophy and North vs South Plate has concluded at the Llanherne and Colebrook Golf Clubs.

 

2012 JAMES BOAG THYNE TROPHY

A thrilling final day has seen the Southern Metropolitan Golf Association (SMGA) and Southern Country Golf Associations (SCGA) announced joint winners of the 2012 James Boag Thyne Trophy.

Heading into the final round the SCGA held a slender lead over both the SMGA and Golf Tasmania North (GTN).

However a four and a half to two and a half match loss by the SCGA to GTN and a six to one match win by the SMGA over Golf North West (GNW) saw the Metro boys bridge the gap and secure a win alongside their Country counterparts.

Both associations finished with two contest points and thirteen and a half match points.

The final standings saw Golf Tasmania North in third place on two contest wins and twelve match points.

Golf North West placed fourth on three match points.

Undefeated players for the tournament included Cameron Bell (GTN), Matthew Cross (SCGA), Drew Roberts (SCGA), Bill Wellington (SCGA), Nathan Gatehouse (SMGA) and Andrew Phillips (SMGA).

2012 JAMES BOAG NORTH VS SOUTH PLATE

Southern Tasmania has won the 2012 James Boag North vs South Plate.

The ladies from the South collected six wins in the singles section of the tournament to win the title eight and a half matches to six and a half.

Individual winners from the South were Jane Hyland, Anne Medlycott, Karen Bannister, Lesley Bick, Alice Burchill and Gayle Wolfe.

The North collected four individual wins through Dianne Cassidy, Lu Proud, Deidre Panton and Jane Donohue.
